Treating Acne Breakouts Using Photodynamic Treatment

By Alison Graham

Photodynamic therapy is not just used to remedy skin troubles such as acne, whiteheads and other blemishes. The treatment has also proved very helpful in treating certain forms of skin cancers. It has turned out to be extremely helpful for this specific purpose, having a considerable effect on reducing the numbers of cancerous cells.

Visible blue light will help with acne because it causes cellular membranes of acne bacteria to break down, which causes the cells to die rapidly, typically within two days of being treated. The blue light is most effective on the bacteria on the skin surface and near the openings of the skin pores as it is unable to travel into the bottom of the pore.

Red light can get further into the skin and reach the oil creating glands which play a large part in the root cause of skin lesions and acne. Whenever these glands generate too much oil, this will cause blockages that lead to spots and provide a good feeding ground for the bacteria. The red light has got the effect of 'damping down' the creation of oil in the sebaceous glands which, therefore, has a helpful effect on the skin.

To avoid the harm which red light might cause to skin, modern photodynamic treatments have a combination of the two wavelengths, often in a pulsed therapy. The skin of non-Caucasian men and women responds best to this type of combined light therapy.

How quickly the improvement in your skin after treatment with photodynamic therapy mainly depends on how quick your skin repairs. The first thing that you will notice would be that the formation of new blemishes is lessened significantly, or even stopped altogether. In most cases, it is true to say that the older you are the slower you will observe results - but they will happen!

There are now home treatment systems providing blue light for eradicating acne blackheads and spots. These are safe and effective to use if you refer to the instructions regarding duration and frequency of use and just how close the skin should be to the light source. For dark skins, the blue light is a particularly effective way of eliminating acne bacteria.

Photodynamic therapy regarding acne is highly effective. It's very efficient at treating the actual sebaceous glands in addition to killing the actual acne causing bacteria. It also reduces oil production with a preventative influence on future outbreaks. It helps to stop pores through becoming clogged and providing a breeding ground for brand new bacteria.
