Benefits of Taking Iron Supplements

By Andrea J Hawthorne

There are certain reasons you will need to take iron supplements, but these reasons ought to be discussed with your medical practitioner before you self-diagnose, medicate and supplement.

Iron is an essential part of the human diet and can be found in red meat, poultry, eggs, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.

Iron helps to produce myoglobin in muscles and boost your bloods haemoglobin. Too little iron in your body can result in anaemia which is characterised by a lack of oxygen carrying cells within the blood. Iron is essential for the production of those oxygen carrying cells. If there is a deficiency, it will limit the amount of oxygen the blood carries and severely impact on your ability to perform.

Anaemia makes you severely tired. Being constantly fatigued makes everything a problem. You can also suffer from muscle weakness, a lack of breath, irritability, severe headaches, food cravings and low blood pressure.

Once iron levels drop restoring them with just your diet is practically impossible. This means that you will need to take an iron supplement to restore your body's iron levels to normal.

The benefits of an iron supplement include:

* Being able to closely monitor the right amount of iron being taken in by the body and adjust your diet gradually

* New vegetarians, in particular, vegans do not have to worry about their diet change adversely affecting their iron levels.

* Combining iron supplements with Vitamin C can help your body to absorb enough iron. Ask your doctor about taking vitamin C as well as an iron supplement.

* Iron can help stabilize the mood

* An increase in energy occurs when you provide your body with the right amount of iron.

* Boost immunity

* Getting your iron levels right without experiencing constipation is far easier if you take supplements.

Taking iron without consulting a doctor is generally speaking not a good idea. You need to establish how much iron you have in your system, take the prescribed supplements and have another blood test to confirm that the supplements you are taking are working and are adequate.
